Today, as I completed an intense CrossFit WOD (workout of the day), a powerful idea reintroduced itself to me. An idea so subtle and practical, that it could be applied to all areas of life, not just fitness.
There’s something about pushing yourself to your limits, and then going a little further. Maybe it was the natural endorphins, but after power lifting, double-unders (jump rope), and max pull-ups, I found myself in a meditative state. Heavily sweating and feeling accomplished, my attention drifted towards my breath and I looked around the room as others were focused on their own workout.
Suddenly, it hit me: The people you surround yourself with will greatly affect your personal success. I am naturally getting stronger and more fit, because I am surrounding myself with people who have common fitness goals and others who have already achieved some form of success with their own fitness. Surrounded by these like-minded individuals has affected me in profound ways. I now have higher expectations for my fitness. I physically push myself harder than ever.
I then thought of other areas of my life. How could I use this simple principle of surrounding myself with like-minded individuals to achieve other goals? For example, how can I apply this to my financial goals? The answer came to me instantly: Simply surround yourself with others who are committed to their financial fitness and others who have achieved some form of success with their own financial situation.
For example, one of my goals is to earn $15,000/month (net). By connecting with others who are aiming to achieve this or who have already surpassed this financial goal, I am only setting myself up for success. Sounds like common sense, right? It certainly is not commonly practiced.
Who’s in your circle?
I challenge you to look at your own circle of influence. One of my mentors reminds me: If you’re the smartest one in your circle, you need to find a new circle. I believe that you can apply this principle across all areas of your life. You have the power to choose who you surround yourself with. Is it your desire to be wealthy? Healthy? In a loving relationship? To work at a job you enjoy? To own a business? Then take a close look at the people you surround yourself with. You are the average of the people you spend the most time with.
