Do you wake up every morning battling your snooze button, convincing yourself that an extra 5 to 10 minutes will give you the energy you need to take on the day? What if you could wake up early right away feeling refreshed and get started on the essential actions that take you closer to making your dreams a reality?
If you’re skeptical, know this: it’s possible! Refusing to snooze used to seem impossible to me, especially when my daily routine consisted of setting my alarm clock at least one hour ahead, knowing that I’d be snoozing multiple times.
After years of snoozing my life away, I’ve finally conquered the early morning ritual of putting my day on pause with the snooze button and falling back asleep.
Successfully completing 21 days of waking up at 5am without snoozing, I have found a new refreshing energy for life. I have become more conscious with my thinking and actions as I am able to get my mind off things my body wants to do and onto things it needs to do.
I’ve Failed Several Times at Waking Up Early
Before beginning this recent challenge, I failed at several attempts to get up right away when my alarm went off. Each time, I eventually slipped back into my old habit of snoozing. I’ve tried going to sleep extra early, multiple alarms, changing up my alarm sounds, putting my alarm clock in hard-to-reach locations, and even looked into these alarm devices that roll away and hide from you.
Many people have asked me HOW I was able to successfully complete this challenge. What was different?
What’s Your Reason for Waking Up?
I’ve learned and confirmed what I’ve been told several times to be true: The HOW is easy, it’s the WHY that is important. How do you begin to lose weight? Proper diet and exercise. How do you begin building wealth? Spend less than your earn. Know your reason why and you won’t be tempted by “quick fixes” and shortcuts that don’t work.
No matter what methods you try, you’ll end up falling back into your deeply ingrained habits that you’ve become accustomed to over the years, if you don’t possess a compelling reason WHY you want to get up early in the first place.
For me, two quick reasons that come to mind are that I have a strong desire to help enable others to reach their dreams and obtaining financial independence so that I may be able to live off the income of my personal resources. I’ve come to realize that I need to take massive action now to make these dreams a reality so waking up early is a serious requirement for me.
How to Wake Up Right Away without Snoozing
Below are 15 ways that will help you wake up right away without snoozing.
- Know your reason WHY. If you want to be be successful, you will need to determine your reason(s) why. Why should you be motivated to make this change in your life in the first place?
- Be easy on yourself. I used to get mad at myself whenever I snoozed and ended up sleeping in later than I intended. This eventually became part of my habit of waking up; I’d snooze and then get upset with myself on a daily basis. Understand that making this change in your life is a process. You’re already on the right path moving towards establishing positive changes in your life, so take it easy.
- Breathe and stretch. As soon as I get up, I fill my lungs with a deep breath, stretch out my arms and legs in all directions, and then jump out of bed. Once out of bed, following up with actual stretching techniques and breathing in the crisp morning air is so revitalizing!
- Practice makes permanent. Conscious discipline will be required at first, but for long term success, you’ll need to train your subconscious mind. The goal is to make waking up without snoozing an automatic habit you don’t even have to think about. Practice this throughout the day with your naps or use a timer for planned practice sessions.
- Plan your day ahead of time. Don’t let your sleepy-self negotiate you back into sleeping in. Plan tasks to perform as soon as you wake up. Already knowing what to do when you rise will prevent you from “rationalizing”. Without proper planning, I used to get back into bed and would fall asleep thinking about what I should do.
- Go to the bathroom right away. Simply go to the bathroom and wash your face, or take a shower. The change in temperature and lighting will wake you up to embrace the day.
- Make commitments to others that you’d feel bad breaking. Advertise your wake up goals with others. Schedule early morning workouts or meetings with others to force yourself to get up. You can also set up a monetary fee for days you snooze.
- Build a support team. Share your goal with others who will provide support and hold you accountable. Ask someone who wakes up early to give you a call in the morning. One day during this challenge, I was in bed at 3am and fortunately was able to wake up at 5am because I had someone special wake me up (I ended up mopping the floor :)).
- Music. Put together a soundtrack to start off your day. What music can get you up with passion and excitement?
- Wake up with enthusiastic gratitude. Something as simple as saying “thank you!” out loud as you wake up can make a huge difference as it gets your mind on all the blessings you already have. Be grateful for the opportunity to wake up.
- Use personal mantras and affirmations. Mantras and affirmations are powerful statements that can help redirect your focus and attention. Make sure your affirmation is personal, positive and in the present tense. One of my current affirmations is: “I expand in abundance, success, and love, everyday and in every way, as I inspire others around me to do the same.”
- Reward yourself. You can start with rewarding yourself with something pleasurable as soon as you get up (a delicious treat, the sunrise, a good book, etc). Set up a bigger reward for waking up without snoozing for 21 days. Honestly, the real reward will be all the benefits you’ll receive from this new habit of refusing to snooze.
- Track your progress. Keeping a record of your progress can be a motivational tool to help you reach your goal.
- Review your goals the night before. This is related to knowing your reason why (see #1). By reviewing your goals at night, you’ll allow them to “marinate” in your mind as you sleep and it will serve as a motivating force to rise the following morning.
- Make it a game. Don’t let the sun catch you in bed! Challenge others who are interested and who are willing to participate in a friendly competition where everyone can win.
